Displacement Effects Theory
According to the Freudian psychology, the displacement theory coins the idea of the mind mechanism of keeping or disposing of information in human mind. This unconscious process happens within and the transference of emotions, ideas, and information occur to alleviate anxiety. The concept is similar to the dream distortion were the newest thoughts replaces the irrelevant and insignificant information. This transference of emotions, which occur during various situations can be psychologically termed as displacement effect.
Displacement effects theory states that the human mind has a defense mechanism which involuntarily displaces the effect from an individual or anything which are felt undesirable with a different situation, which are felt more acceptable. This active displacement effect occurring in the mind, which leads to finding a more satisfying alternative, is an involuntary stress relieving mechanism programmed in our minds.
The displacement effects acts like a cycle. While confronted with an undesirable circumstance, the human mind works instinctively to mend the situation by building up a solution. This stressful event occurring in the mind can lead to the displacement of the situation or an entity with a much safer alternative, which can be of little or no relevance.
Displacement effects can be seen in the situations to suppress anger, and the consequence of this containment can grow overtime. In such cases, contained feelings/emotions are let out to the target or to a safer alternative.
Displacement effects can be a common issue in many cases and the effects can be minor in most of the cases. But the extreme effects of displacement can be dangerous and is considered a psychotic problem that may need to be seriously evaluated and treated. Psychologists can treat with methods to control the emotions with more effective ways of dealing to overcome the situation.
Scope and application
